The Person of the Week: Mary Lewyc
\nLife gives us unexpected meetings with people of interesting fates. Mary Lewyc is one of the elders of the Winnipeg’s Russian-speaking community, and she has been living in Canada since 1948. In the autumn of 2011, this aristocratic, beautiful, well-read lady, a connoisseur of Russian literature, will be 90. The Millennium library is her second home. Books are her spiritual food. In the 1920s, nine Austro-Hungarian prisoners of the World War I were settled down in a Russian village. One of them became Mary’s father. When the amnesty came four years later, his compatriots decided to return to their motherland, but János, a carpenter and constructor, had already rooted on the Russian land. During the time of NEP (the New Economic Politics) his family’s land was taken away, and he was forced to join collective farms, so-called kolkhoz. As he was against that, János was sent to Kazakhstan, and a few weeks later at night Mary together with her mother and sister followed the same way. Women and children were taken to Kazakh prairies in freight trains like cattle and were left in the middle of nothing. They were given only shovels and were ordered to dig earth-houses for the upcoming winter. Women were screaming and crying while running after the train going away. Later on, men were brought to work in mines. Mary’s mother managed to bribe a train security that agreed to take her and her children to Bashkiria. There she could find out her husband’s whereabouts and establish contact with him after which the whole family joined him in Siberia. Mary’s mother longed for Russia, so three years later the family first moved to Bashkiria, then – to the station of Ruzaevka in Mordvinia, where János built a house. Mary graduated from a high school dreaming to become a captain. She entered the Nizhniy-Novgorod Polytechnic College of Water Transport, graduated from it n April 1941, and was appointed a second assistant captain on the passenger ship “Krasnoflotets” in Belorussia. The World War II caught Mary in the city of Bobruisk during her sailing. She had been evacuating people and cargo to Kiev till September 1941 and after was appointed to Stalingrad, but her destiny played with her another game: during bombing in one of Ukrainian villages on her way to Stalingrad, Mary found herself in the German captivity and together with 5000 men and 500 women had to walk 30 km per day to the Western Ukraine. The exhausted and fallen were shot immediately. Upon arrival, Mary was given an office job, and she was starving daily as all food stores were only open while she was at work. Later on, she requested to transfer her to a canteen work that ultimately helped her survive. In 1943 Germans began to fail the war and took Mary to Germany where she worked in a shop on loading of blast furnace. Once she was close to death when she lost control at her wagon, which was on the 20-metre height, and miraculously Mary managed to take out of the cabin and go down on the rope ladder. In Germany Mary married. In 1948 she and her husband were invited to visit his relatives’ Canadian farm that surprised Mary with its poverty even in comparison to the postwar Germany. Only bread and jam were offered with no limit there. After a few months of such a farm life, Mary and her husband moved to Winnipeg where her sailing profession was demanded at all. The garment factory appeared the only place of Mary’s skills’ application. She dedicated to it 30 years of her life. When I met Mary the first time, I was impressed with her blue bottomless eyes, her aristocratically refined face and wavy hair that on the whole reminded me of the image of Pushkin. Mary speaks English brilliantly but her Russian is a real classical literary language that you want to listen to endlessly like a lullaby. It pours and inspires her listeners. Let God bless you dear Mary Ivanovna for many beautiful years of life!  \n<\/p>\n
